Problem Solved: Concentration Camps In China Interning Muslims
BY: JAYDA MAYFIELD
About the situation
Over one million muslims are being held in China’s camps. More than a million Uighurs and others belonging to Muslim minority groups are being detained in China’s Xinjiang region. Xinjiang is an autonomous territory in northwest China, is a vast region of deserts and mountains.
China calls them “transforming camps” built to prevent extremism from spreading. However, reports indicate that it is more like a prison.
The chinese government is expanding detention camps in an effort to suppress the Uigur Muslim minority in China. At least 1 million have been interned since 2017 in more than 85 identified camps within Xinjiang.
Though the Chinese government denied the camps existence, images of the camps with barbed wire fences emerged.
Members of the Muslim minority say they were detained, interrogated, beaten, and even killed becasue of their religion. Many say that it is clear they were interned, not “re-educated” as the Chinese government claims.
There are around 11 million Uigurs in Xinjiang. Uighurs speak several dialects of two languages divided by territory.
You may wonder why they are being targeted. China claims the Uighurs hold extremist views that are a threat to security.
